This collection contains a great deal of information regarding the development of the East Carolina School of Medicine, including planning, politics, legislation, advertisement, construction, partnerships, details of the personnel involved, groundbreakings and other ceremonies, departments, additional buildings, and community services.

Biographical/historical information

Edwin Wall Monroe, born 1927 March 10 to Robert Andrew and Berrie Bryant Monroe in Laurinburg, N.C., was a prominent North Carolina physician and university dean. He married Nancy Laura Gaquerel on 1953 March 14 and their daughter, Martha Lynn, was born the following year. Monroe received his Bachelor's degree at the University of Louisville in 1946, conducted his post-graduate work at Davidson College in 1947, attended UNC School of Medicine 1947-1949, and earned his MD at the University of Pennsylvania in 1951. He interned at the Medical College of Virginia 1951-1952 and was a resident in internal medicine at North Carolina Memorial Hospital at UNC 1952-1956. After completing his residency, Monroe came to Greenville, North Carolina, to practice internal medicine 1956-1968 before becoming the dean of the School of Allied Health and Social Professions and the director of Health Affairs for East Carolina University. He then served as vice-chancellor of Health Affairs 1971-1979, associate dean of East Carolina University's School of Medicine 1979-1986, a member of the staff of Pitt County Memorial Hospital (previously Vidant, now ECU Health), and the executive dean of ECU's School of Medicine 1986-1990 when he retired. He also served on the Board of Trustees for Pitt County Memorial Hospital and University Health Systems of East Carolina (previously Vidant, now ECU Health).
