Biographical/historical information

Joseph Shields was born 1827 December 15 in Indiana County, Pennsylvania and died 1899 August 11 in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. At an early age he entered the office of Dr. S.G. Berryhill, at Plumville, as a student of medicine. He attended Cleveland Medical College in the 1850s and graduated in 1855. Shields first practiced medicine in Perrysville, remaining there nine years and then in 1864, moved to Punxsutawney. He married Margaret Lewis and had two children: Floranna "Fannie," who married Dr. W.F. Matson, and Joseph, who became the proprietor of the drug store his father formerly owned.

William Ferguson Matson was born 1855 September 15 to James and Harriet (Potter) Matson. He married Floranna Shields, daughter of Dr. Joseph and Margaret (Lewis) Shields, in 1886 and they had Ethel (Steim) and Joseph Shields Matson. He attended Cleveland Medical College in the 1870s. Matson died 1914 March 8 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
