Marie and Frank Stahl were siblings, born to William L. and Mary Elizabeth (Reifsnider) Stahl. Frank was born 18 October 1873 and Marie was born 18 July 1878, both in Ohio. The family moved around quite a bit because of William and Mary's mounting debts and losing homes. Eventually, the family settled in Richmond, Virginia, where Frank had to support his parents and sibling. He married Josephine Hennighausen and they had daughter Mary Josephine in 1919. Both siblings would end up committing suicide; Marie in June 1925 and Frank in April 1939.

Newell had found Marie Stahl's journal in 1987 and became fascinated with finding any living descendants of Marie or Frank's. It was not until the following year when Newell and Melchior were in Richmond doing research that they chose to drive pass all of Frank Stahl's residences that were listed in city directories. At his last residence, Newell and Melchior decided to knock on the door to see if the resident's knew the Stahl's. As it turned out, Frank Stahl's only daughter, Mary (Stahl) Southall, lived in the house. Southall recounted information and her recollections from growing up about her parents and her Stahl grandparents.
