Dr. Lemuel Weyler (L.W.) Kornegay Sr. was born in Wayne County on 1881 October 30 to Robert Kornegay and Henrietta Elanor Parrott Kornegay. His wife was Lonomie Dumais Kornegay. Dr. Kornegay co-founded the Rocky Mount Sanitarium with Dr. John L. Lane and Dr. Walter Staley in 1913. It opened as a general hospital of forty beds serving eastern North Carolina. The Rocky Mount Sanitarium Nurses Training School served in conjunction with the hospital. In 1922, it was sold to a Franciscan order of nuns who operated the hospital for one year before selling it back to Kornegay. Dr. L.W. Kornegay died in Rocky Mounty on 1944 December 18.
Robert Dumais Kornegay, M.D. was born in Rocky Mounty on 1914 June 30 to Dr. L.W. Kornegay Sr. and Lonomie Dumais Kornegay. His wife was Anne Ruth Ennis Kornegay. He died on 1994 November 19.
This collection contains a variety of items related to Dr. Robert Kornegay and his father Dr. Lemuel W. Kornegay. Dr. Robert Kornegay's physician's certificate of registration and a series of pamphlets make up the first two files. The third file holds materials related to the Rocky Mount Sanitarium, including, invitations, newspaper clippings, and a postcard.
