This collection of Tom Shields' records contains his correspondence, research materials, teaching materials, materials from his involvement in professional conferences and organizations, publications, and files from East Carolina's Roanoke Colonies Research Office.

Biographical/historical information

Tom Shields earned a B.A. at Bucknell University, an M.A. at Western Kentucky University, and a Ph.D. at University of Tennessee. At East Carolina University he taught undergraduate and graduate courses on American literature, especially early American and frontier literature, undergraduate literary survey and composition courses, and graduate research methods. His research interests and publications focus on the Spanish and English literature of colonial North America, particularly the "Lost Colony" and John Lawson). He retired from East Carolina University in the summer of 2022.
