This collection contains James L. White's materials from his time stationed in Japan while serving in World War II.


Biographical/historical information

Dr. James L. White was born in Scotland Neck, North Carolina. He received an Associate of Arts degree from Mars Hill College in 1941 and a Bachelor of Arts degree from East Carolina University in 1943. He served in the U. S. Army during World War II and was stationed in Japan. He then earned a Master of Education in 1947 and a Doctorate in Education in 1952 from Columbia University. He joined the East Carolina Business Education faculty in 1948 and taught for 36 years, retiring as Professor Emeritus in 1984. In 1965 he organized the school's Office of Sponsored Programs. Outside of the university, in 1954 Dr. White founded the state chapter of the Future Business Leaders of America. He was appointed the state's first Equal Opportunity Act coordinator in 1964. He was involved in several church choirs. He died Sunday, Jan. 22, 2006 in Greenville, North Carolina.
