  • Biographical / Historical Note

    Born January 13, 1914 in New Bern, North Carolina, Dr. Simmons served as the Director of Continuing Medical Education for Pitt Memorial Hospital from 1978-1982.

    Dr. Patterson graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill in 1935, followed by University of Pennsylvania Medical School, graduating in 1939. He did his rotating internship and residency in surgery at Abington Memorial Hospital in Abington PA from 1939 – 1945. During his time here he met Ms. Ruth Read, whom he married in 1944.

    After his residency, Dr. Patterson stayed in PA for another year, remaining at Abington Memorial and joining the surgery staff at Lankenau Hospital in Philadelphia, PA. In 1946 he became Chief of Surgery and Chief of Staff for Scotland County Memorial Hospital in Laurinburg, NC. His career then moved him to Duke University in 1968 where he became an Assistant Professor of Surgery. During these years he still practiced as a surgeon and consultant and held other titles in addition to being a professor.

    Dr. Patterson arrived in Greenville, NC in 1975 taking the position of Executive Director of the Eastern Area Health Education Center as well as the Associate Dean of Continuing Medical Education and Professor of Surgery at ECU’s School of Medicine. He helped develop the program at ECU, staying until his retirement in 1982.

    Dr. Patterson has over 20 publications and belonged to numerous medical and surgical associations making a large positive impact on his profession.
