Biographical/historical information
The annual catalogs have been published since 1909. The graduate catalog was first published in 1941 but was not published regularly until 1968. That year the annual catalog became the undergraduate catalog. The summer session catalog was published separately from 1912 through 1986. In 1938 the catalogs became quarterly publications. The summer catalog was always issue No.1 and the annual catalog was issue No.2. The remaining two issues were special topic publications. The special publications continued until 1953.
The summer school program began at East Carolina Teachers Training School as a plan to allow teachers already in the profession an opportunity to continue their formal education. First offered in 1912, the Summer School program was considered one of four portions of the school year. Those that attended three of four portions were considered fully enrolled. During the summer term, all campus services offered during the other three terms were available including the infirmary, library, and dorms.
A masters degree in education program was first authorized at East Carolina in 1929. The masters degree program was championed by Robert H. Wright as a way to allow graduates to have greater success finding work, espcecially after the onset of the Depression. The first Master of Arts degree was earned by Deanie Boone Haskett in August 1933. Additional graduate degree programs in school administration were approved in 1941.
