The Ledonia Wright Cultural center is named after a former East Carolina community health professor, Ledonia Wright, who founded the campus organization SOULS, Society of United Liberal Students and helped establish the school's first Afro-American Cultural Center. This center was renamed in her honor following her death in 1976.
