Captain Newsom provided an overview of his Naval Academy and World War II experiences, concentrating briefly on his experiences at Pearl Harbor; duty aboard the destroyer-minesweeper USS HOPKINS at Gaudalcanal, Savo Island, Munda, and Tulagi; flight school and blimp training; appointment to the USS CALIFORNIA; the invasionary force against Japan; and return the the U.S.
