This one-sheet version of Popple's famous twenty-sheet map of the British Empire in America (1733) represents the first large-scale English mapping of the North American continent. It is one of the two most important maps of the continent published during the colonial era (the other being John Mitchell's map of 1755). It is a fundamental centerpiece of any serious collection of North American maps. George Washington owned a copy of the map. John Adams praised it. Benjamin Franklin ordered two sets of Popple's maps, one for the Pennsylvania Assembly and the other for himself. Purchased from Richard B. Arkway (8/6/2002); Appraised by Lynn Roundtree (Armadillo Books, 8/31/2002)
