Alfred Franklin Hammond represents the names of three generations of Eastern North Carolina physicians: Alfred F. Hammond (ca. 1831- ca. 1885), his son Alfred F. Hammond Sr. (1875-1956), and his son Alfred F. Hammond Jr. (1908-1993).
Alfred F. Hammond was born about 1831 and graduated from Wake Forest College in 1852. He entered the Confederate Army in the 19th Regiment, 5th Brigade, North Carolina Militia in January 1862. Soon after the Civil War, he married Annie Eliza Cox and they had Annie M., William Henry, Julia C., Jackson Lee, Sallie P., Alfred Franklin, and Edward Augustus. They lived in the Cypress Creek Township of Jones County. He died about 1885.
Alfred F. Hammond Sr. was born 1874 December 29 to Alfred and Annie (Cox) Hammond. He studied at Wake Forest College and then at the Medical College of Virginia at Richmond. In 1906, he married Dollie Varden Koonce and they had three children: Annie, Alfred F. Jr., and William Lee. Hammond lived in and was a doctor for the town of Pollocksville, North Carolina from his graduation about 1903 until his death. He died 1956 October 30 at Duke Hospital in Durham, North Carolina. His brother, dentist William Lee Hammond, studied at Chapel Hill and at the University of Virginia at Richmond. He served in the U.S. Army Dental Corp and left after four years as a "Major." Note a "Blood-count Kit" (dated 1917 June 2 ) in the Laupus Artifact Collection that may have belonged to one of these men.
Alfred F. Hammond Jr. was born 1908 August 11 to Alfred and Dollie (Koonce) Hammond. He graduated from Duke University in 1928 and Thomas Jefferson University in 1934. He first served the Grifton community in Pitt County for two years and then moved to New Bern in Craven County. In 1941, he married Lucy Olivia Barrow, and he died 1993 August 18.
