Papers include Joseph B. Philips record book; Walter E. Philips’ memoirs, poems and other writings; and biographical information about several Philips men.
James Jones Philips was born 12 March 1798. He married Harriet Amanda Burt in 1834 and had Sallie Tart (Parker), Frederick, Susan Sims, James J., Joseph B., John Ward, Harriet Amanda (Bunn), Laura Maud (Arrington), Elizabeth Jane (Battle), William Burn, Martha Parker and Walter Everett. He entered the office of Dr. Cullen Battle as a medical student, and after studying medicine with him, took his course of medical lectures in Philadelphia. He died 10 April 1874 in Edgecombe County, North Carolina.
Joseph Battle Philips was born 8 January 1848 to James Jones and Harriet (Burt) Philips near Battleboro, North Carolina. His first wife was Mary Marriot and they had George Cullen, William Burt, Joseph Battle, Mary P, and Frank Parker. His second wife was Martha “Betty” Battle and together they had Henry and Benjamin. Philips was elected to the North Carolina General Assembly in 1889 and 1891, and was the chairman of the Committee on Agriculture. He died 27 June 1925.
Joseph Battle Philips was born 25 November 1879 in South Whitakers to Joseph Battle and Betty (Battle) Philips. He earned his doctorate in medicine from the University of Maryland and was a country doctor in the Middlesex area for more than 20 years. He married Junietta Kemp in 1910 and had Joseph B., Kemp, Mary Metta (Farmer), and Hartwell. He died 20 September 1934.
Walter Evert Philips was born 17 July 1860 to James Jones and Harriet (Burt) Philips. He died 2 May 1939.
