    The Clara G. Gentry Nursing Papers include materials from Gentry's time in nursing school and her career afterwards. The collection consists of photographs, educational records, diplomas, and correspondence.

  • Biographical / Historical Note

    Clara G. Gentry, the oldest of 7 children, was born in Roxboro, Person County, North Carolina, on 12 February 1902 to James Larkin and Rosa Bell (Buchanan) Gentry. Her mother and two of her sisters were nurses. She graduated from Watts Nurses Training School in 1932. At some point, she was the county nurse in Person County for Dr. Gentry, and she rode with him out to patients’ homes. At 36 she married Christopher C. Scott and moved from Durham, where she was a nurse at Watts Hospital, to a farm in Wilson County, where she resigned from the profession. Gentry died 11 February 1978.
