Biographical/historical information

Edmund Simpson Boice was born 1883 December 16 to Cyrene and Eliza (Bond) Boice. He was a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania class of 1909 with the degree of Doctor of Medicine. Boice had previously graduated in 1905 from Washington and Lee University with his Bachelor of Arts. Edmund was a surgeon at the Johnston-Willis Sanatorium in Richmond, Va. from 1910-1914 before moving to North Carolina to work as a surgeon at Park View Hospital in Rocky Mount. He married Lyall E. Caughy in 1912 or 1913, and died 1975 November 2 in Rocky Mount, North Carolina.

Scope and arrangement

Contained in the collection are notebooks, pamphlets, photographs and negatives from Boice's time at the University of Pennsylvania and his career afterwards. There are glass negatives of tissue samples taken from patients at the Johnston-Willis Sanatorium, Richmond, Va. with notes on the tissue type, patient's name, and diagnosis. Other glass negatives show a female nurse holding a baby, and a woman, presumably the mother, lying in a hospital bed with the infant. Copies of these negatives are also available in photograph form. A set of glass negatives and accompanying photographs from the University of Pennsylvania show several young men performing various athletic activities, particularly gymnastics, as well as formal poses. Boice was on the University of Pennsylvania's gymnastics team from 1906-1908 and may be seen in these photographs, though unidentified.

Two notebooks from Dr. Boice contain his class notes from a 1908-1909 Clinical Medicine course with Dr. Stengel and a 1909 Surgical Pathology course. The collection also includes a souvenir football program from the 31 October 1908 University of Pennsylvania versus Carnegie Tech (now called Carnegie Mellon) game; the November 1912 issue of the school newspaper, The Pennsylvania Punch Bowl; and a flyer advertising Alpha Mu Pi Omega's "Grand Annual Fall Smoker" on 12 October 1907, which lists Boice a committee member.
