The collection includes materials (1898-1959) documenting the work of Shackleford Banks native Josiah Clark Chadwick working on freighters running from North Carolina to New York, and then with the Army Corps of Engineers in North Carolina (1927-1959) working the Eastern N.C. federal waterway projects on diesel engines and then inspecting dredges. Included are family history, Chadwick's work history, training materials, engineers' level books, logbooks, and inventories of engineering property in Chadwick's charge.

Biographical/historical information

Josiah Clark Chadwick (known to family and friends as "Joey") was born on March 28, 1898 to Josiah Willis Chadwick (1861-1950) and Missouri Moore (1871-1948). He had two siblings, Samuel Thomas Chadwick (1901-1979) and Pauline Ruth Chadwick (1904-2000).

Josiah was one of the last babies born on Shackleford Banks before the 1899 hurricane forced all residents to move to the mainland by 1902. His family established residence in Beaufort shortly after moving to the mainland and the home is still occupied by the family to this day.

He married Stella Sophia Morris (1904-1979) in 1926 and together they had three sons: Francis Clark Chadwick (1928-1998), John "Jack" Willis Chadwick (1930-1997), and Warren J. Chadwick (1932-?).

Chadwick held a variety of positions throughout his working life, most of it involving maritime settings. He started as a Western Union radio operator in 1917 before moving to the shipping industry to work on freighters that ran between North Carolina and New York. He found work with the Army Corps of Engineers in North Carolina in 1927.

Josiah worked for 32 years in the Army Corps of Engineers primarily doing inspection work on diesel engines and then shifted to dredge inspection work in 1949. Over the course of his career, his service included duty on the Manteo, Albemarle, Neuse, Kitty Hawk, Dredge Josenhans, and more. He also worked on the famously shipwrecked SS Sapona. Josiah Chadwick passed away on March 31, 1980.
