Papers of Richard Herman McLawhorn, Jr. (1923-1987) of Ayden Township, Pitt County, North Carolina that are related to his childhood and his service during World War II as a bombardier on the bomber "Tail Heavy" with the U.S. Army Air Corps 485th Bomb Group.


Biographical/historical information

Richard Herman McLawhorn, Jr., was born in Ayden Township, Pitt County, North Carolina, on August 31, 1923. His parents were Richard Herman McLawhorn, Sr. (1890-1971) and Mary Jane "Janie" Tyson (1900-1946). In World War II he served as a bombardier on the bomber "Tail Heavy" with the U.S. Army Air Corps 485th Bomb Group. After the war he returned to Pitt County where he was a farmer in the Renston community. He married Betty Ellis (1921-1987) and they were the parents of seven children. He died on June 19, 1987.

Included are photographs of Richard Herman McLawhorn Jr. as a child and material related to his World War II experience as a bombardier on the bomber "Tail Heavy" with the U. S. Army Air Corps 485th Bomb Group. One of the childhood photographs shows cotton being loaded onto horse-drawn carts to take to market. Also included are a 1946 account book concerning the tobacco sales, a 1950-1960 account book for medical expenses, and genealogy notes and photographs related to Charles and Maggie McLawhorn.

Also includes an application for furlough (1918) which includes information about Charles McLawhorn's farm, and a family history sheet listing the children of Charles and Maggie McLawhorn.
