Letters (August 1917-August 13, 1919) written by Mary and Gordon Robertson of Africa Inland Mission while they were working in the Belgian Congo. They described their work providing education and religious training, how World War I was affecting the area, indigenous customs, and the practice of cannibalism which was still in existence in some villages.


Biographical/historical information

Mary and Gordon Robertson were a married couple that were part of the Africa Inland Mission. The Mission was founded in 1895 and was composed of workers in the field that would be entirely self-governing and independent from the Missionary Council in the United States. The mission group was part of the Protestant Mission which originally began work in Kenya then expanded to German East Africa, Tanganyika, and Tanzania.
