Biographical/historical information

David LeRoy Corbitt (1895–1967) was born in Chicod Township, Pitt County and was the only son out of the three children. When David was younger he had typhoid fever, small pox, and rheumatism and was sent to John Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore for three weeks. When he returned, he was confined to the house, spending the majority of his time reading, sewing, and embroidering. He graduated from high school at the age of 24 due to his illnesses and attended the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill from 1920-1924.

After receiving his degree, he was employed at the North Carolina Historical Commission in Raleigh, NC. David was the chief library assistant from 1924 to 1926. He was appointed to chief archivist in 1926 until 1945 when he became the head of the division of publications of the agency. During his career he contributed to the expansion of archival and publication programs. He assisted in organizing historical societies and was preside of the Historical Society of North Carolina from 1958-1959. After his retirement from the Department of Archives and History in 1961, he worked part-time as a consultant.
