Papers (ca. 1796-1939, 1963) relating to the Abbott, Sumrell, Phillips, Fife, and Trout Families of Contentnea Neck Township, Lenoir County, North Carolina, and Johnson County, Indiana.

Scope and arrangement

The papers center on the Abbott, Sumrell, Phillips, Fife, and Trout familes of Contentnea Neck Township, Lenoir County, North Carolina and of Johnson County, Indiana. This small collection of family papers mainly contain financial and land records with the additional material consisting of correspondence, notes, military records, printed material, a scrapbook, newspaper clippings, an architectural blueprint and drawings. Researchers who are into movie history will find the scrapbook and the newspaper issue clipping of the Atlanta Journal of particular interest since they contain pictures and information on the movie, "Gone With The Wind". The printed materials include a book on the life of George Washington, a 1904 calendar, a guidebook on Washington, D.C. and a thank you note. The financial records include tax receipts paid from 1890 to 1901. Most noteworthy are the land certificates issued by the General Land Office of Indianapolis, Indiana and signed by U.S. Presidents Andrew Jackson and Martin Van Buren.
