Biographical/historical information

The Red Oak Christian Church in Greenville, N.C. was established in April 1871. The church was originally known as Berea Church but in September 1885, it was decided at a quarterly meeting to change the name to Red Oak. Church meetings were held at the Frog Level School and at other places such as Forbes School. But church members were able to have a church structure built and dedicated in October 1885.

Church membership grew over the years since Red Oak's establishment in 1871. Among the charter members were William Henry May, Theophilus Smith, Joshua W. Smith, Benjamin W. Tyson, Moses W. Tyson, Elizabeth W. Smith, Elvira A. Tyson, Mary E. Tyson, Lucy A.C. Nichols, Julia A. Corey, and Clemmie Garris Watford.

Scope and arrangement

The Red Oak Christian Church and its' history is the chief subject of the collection. Church records, clippings, and a record book give much detail of the church's history. Of particular interest is the information on the church's membership. Lists of church members provide their birth and death dates as well as information related to their church activities. The Red Oak News scrapbook clippings are also a source of information on church members as well as a source of information on Red Oak's activities and on other Churches of Christ in other towns.
