The items of greatest interest in this collection are the records of transfer of ownership of slaves, both by sale and by inheritance, in Beaufort and Hyde counties, N. C. The collection includes a bill of sale (1815) and wills of Aaron Wilkerson (1791) and William Clark (1806, 1809), all of which provide for the disposal of slaves among family and friends of the deceased owner. A division of slave property (1824) lists slaves by name, ages of some, and the projected monetary value. Also included are a Hyde County deed (1785) and a list (1792) of taxable property in Mattamuskeet township, which contains name of property holders, white and black taxables, and land holdings.
