Collection (1785-1824) containing photocopies of the original correspondence, tax lists, wills, records of enslaved persons, deed, property holders.


Scope and arrangement

The items of greatest interest in this collection are the records transferring enslaved persons from their previous enslavers to their new enslavers in Beaufort and Hyde counties, N.C. through bills of sale and inheritance. The collection includes a bill of sale (1815) and wills of the enslaver Aaron Wilkerson (1791) and the enslaver William Clark (1806, 1809), all of which provide for the transferring of enslaved persons among family and friends of the deceased enslavers. A list of enslaved persons (1824) that include names, ages of some, and their projected monetary value. Also included are a Hyde County deed (1785) and a list (1792) of taxable property in Mattamuskeet Township, which contains name of property holders, white and black taxables, and land holdings. Note: All materials are photocopies of the original documents.
