Lieutenant Beverly W. White of Elizabeth City, N.C., kept a log of events for combat team "B" during its tour of duty in the Pacific during World War II. Lt. White was stationed aboard the USS PRESIDENT HAYES.
The diary covers the events from the ship leaving San Diego on July 1, 1942, until September 29, 1942. White describes the sea voyage that took them through the Fiji Islands into the Hebrides Islands. He remained on board during the first landing at Guadalcanal and mentions that both submarines and airplanes attacked the ship. They were sent to the ALHENA and from there they landed on Guadalcanal. The log ends on September 29 with only training and routine matters occupying their time while on the island.
