Biographical/historical information

Edward H. Brodie, of Zebulon, N.C., is a former East Carolina University student and member of the Fountainhead staff.

Scope and arrangement

As a student, Brodie compiled material consisting of interviews, correspondence, and publications relating to the history of ECU.

The collection contains information concerning the early years of East Carolina Teacher's Training School and highlights the sequence of events leading from the establishment of the school in 1907 to its subsequent development into a university in 1967. Also included are interviews and articles relating to student impressions of the early years and material featuring the founders of the school such as first president Robert Herring Wright and former Governor Thomas Jarvis, who along with J. Y. Joyner and W. H. Ragsdale, participated actively in the campaign to establish the school.

Of particular interest is a notebook containing typescript and printed articles tracing ECU's growth from its origin to 1969. Two correspondence files exist. The first consists primarily of photocopies of letters among ECU's founders; and the second contains Brodie's personal research correspondence.
