Scope and arrangement

This collection consists of records from CHowan County, N.C., including a deed from Alexander Parish to Edmund Brinkley for the sale of land (1823); a deed from William and Humphrey Wright to Edmund Brinkley for the sale of land (1834); an account book (1848-1853) with financial transactions relating to dry goods, home repairs, and the renting out of enslaved people; as well as the last will and testament of Edmund Brinkley which leaves his personal property, including enslaved people and real estate, to his wife and children (1853). The Hiring-out system allowed a hirer to temporarily rent or lease an enslaved person from a slaveowner, generating revenue for the slaveowner through the labor of the enslaved people completing the work.
