The man seated on the phone (on the left) is Delton Perry, a NC State Highway Patrol Trooper. The man standing is Walter Gray, who later became police chief of the Town of Bethel. The man seated writing (on the right) is Bethel Police Chief Sam Henry Martin. This photo was evidently taken between about 1956 and 1959. Delton Perry is wearing PFC (Private First Class) stipes indicating that he is an experienced trooper. He was a state trooper when he married Ola Nell Perry of Bethel in 1951. He resigned from the NCSHP in 1959 and became manager/owner of Purina Feed Mills. He was my Boy Scout Master as well as serving for a period as Bethel Fire Chief. He was also active in the Bethel Methodist Church. Walter Gray was both Bethel Public Works Director/Chief of Police for a long time, after Same Henry Martin. He retired in the 1980s. The man seated on the right (Sam Henry Martin) was Bethel Public Works Director/Chief of Police for a long time, prior to Walter Gray. He is the uncle (or perhaps great-uncle) of retired Pitt County District Court Judge James (Jim) Martin.
