Abstract:
The Perigord truffle, which sells for up to $2,000 a pound, usually grows in Spain and France and is one of the prized delicacies in the world. For the past seven years, Frank and Betty Garland have been growing and harvesting the black truffles on their farm, in Orange County. They are the only Perigord truffle growers in North America. Now a $235,000 grant from the North Carolina Tobacco Trust Fund is offering farmers the chance to find out if this is the new crop they have been searching for.
