Free Blacks, Quakers, and the Underground Railroad
Abstract:
The author challenges the portrayal of the Underground Railroad created by popular culture, asserting it is incomplete. What Israel adds to the knowledge canon of the Underground Railroad includes contributions made by free blacks, Quakers, and Southerners; lesser-known purposes for the Railroad; its actual success rate; the number of fugitives who escaped without aid.
