Abstract:
In 1878, John and Jacob Briley, brothers, who lived about four miles north of the Tar River, were attacked and robbed on the road on the north side of the Tar River bridge. John Briley died and Jacob was expected to die. Three black men, Reuben Harris, John Mayo and Frank Bell, were arrested on suspicion of committing the assault.
