Abstract:
Jane Pratt, a native of Anson County, was North Carolina's first woman to be elected to the United States House of Representatives. She represented the Eighth Congressional District. She was hired as Congressman Robert L. Doughton's secretary in 1924 and served his two successors in the same capacity. When Congressman William O. Burgin died, she was elected to fill the vacancy.
