Abstract:
McDowell County lies at the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Western Carolina. There are only two important towns there--Marion, the county seat, and Old Fort, one of the historic spots of the area. Most of the industry is located in Marion with two large furniture factories, three huge textile plants, and eight hosiery mills. Although the town's population is only 2,888, industries can draw from 10,000 people within a two mile radius of the town. The county has thousands of acres of farmland producing crops like corn, hay, oats, and Irish and sweet potatoes. Dairying and hog and chicken production also contribute to the farm income.
