Lawrence lists those men who have served as Speakers of the House in the North Carolina General Assembly since 1881, along with a few lines concerning the traits and characteristics of each. The only North Carolinian to serve as Speaker of the House of Representatives in Congress was Nathaniel Macon, and Walter Murphy was the only person to serve as Speaker twice in the North Carolina House.
