Abstract:
John Paul, a young Scotsman born in 1747 went to sea as apprentice at the age of 12 and later became involved in the slave trade. He made his way to North Carolina where he met Wiley Jones of Halifax County, and took up the name of Jones. Jones became the Senior First Lieutenant of the Continental Navy and the United States' first well-known naval fighter of the Revolutionary War.
