Abstract:

Richard Gatling was born in near Murfreesboro in Hertford County. In 1839 he perfected a workable screw propeller only to learn that John Ericsson was granted a patent for the same invention a few months earlier. It was his invention of the machine gun, known as the Gatling gun, that revolutionized warfare and spread his name worldwide.
