Abstract:

Wachovia Bank & Trust Company was founded in Winston-Salem in 1879. Since then it has been an important source of capital and financial leadership for the state. In 1976, Wachovia had 186 offices in 74 North Carolina cities with a workforce of 5,000 and is the country's third largest bank.
