Abstract:
The last hanging in Rowan County took place on July 25th, 1865. Anderson Brown and Whit Ferrand, convicted murderers, were sentenced to death by the courts, and on July 25th, these men were marched to a small gallows where 15,000 people watched them hang. The entire affair was handled like an event with salesmen in the crowd and a baseball game scheduled to end the day.
