Abstract:
Garza Baldwin, Jr., group vice-president of Olin Corporation's Fine Paper and Film Group located in Pisgah Forest in Transylvania County, is featured in this month's We The People Magazine's North Carolina Businessman in the News. The plant, which employs over 3,000, makes a substantial share of all the country's cigarette paper, cellophane, lens tissues, high-quality lightweight printing paper, one-time carbonizing tissue and a variety of other specialty and fine paper products.

Earle C. Hubbard, Assistant Director of the North Carolina Department of Water and Air Resources, discusses water quality and pollution in the state's waterways. There are hundreds of holes across the state left by sand and gravel mining operations. Many are unsightly and many are dangerous. Few are of any use after the mining is finished, and they also constitute a liability. This articles presents information on applying the techniques of good land use to holes in the ground.

This article describes what the U.S. Plywood-Champion Papers, Inc. plant, located on the Pigeon River at Canton in Haywood County, has done and is doing to remove its pollution byproducts from the environment. The plant opened in 1908 and is one of the nation's oldest and largest paper mills.

Abstract:
In 1897, George W. Vanderbilt traveled to the English Isle of Jersey to collect a choice herd of Jersey cattle intended for family use. Today there are 1,500 Jerseys in the herd at Biltmore Dairy Farms, one of the largest and finest dairy herds in the world.

Abstract:
North Carolina has a reputation of being the brick-making capital of the world. Pine Hall Brick and Pipe Company, which originated in Pine Hall in Stokes County in 1922, has opened a new, fully-automated plant near Madison. In a seven and one-half hour day, the plant can turn out 100,000 of Pine Hall's famous red-burned shale bricks. Over a year this would represent half of the company production of 100-million bricks.

The Bank of Granite is a home-owned bank with headquarters in Granite Falls. John A. Forlines Jr., president of the bank, took over the bank's management in 1954. Total bank resources at that time were just over $1 million. Today's the bank's capital account totals almost $2 million with resources almost $17 million.
