October marks the beginning of bear hunting season for the western forests of North Carolina. Much of the best bear hunting grounds in the southern Appalachians have been incorporated into the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, and has become a game refuge.

Kanipe relates how his father, Daniel A. Kanipe of Lincoln County, who was a sergeant in Custer's expedition against the Sioux in 1876, escaped death when Custer dispatched him to carry messages to Captains McDougall and Benteen. He had participated in a number of campaigns again Native Americans and was Captain of Company 19, Home Guards in World War I.
