Abstract:
Students and professionals studied biology and botany at various facilities on the coast. Dr. Shaftesbury began taking students from the Woman's College, U.N.C. to Beaufort and Duke University and then constructed a marine biological unit on Pivers Island at Beaufort in 1938. Resources for students and professionals included the U.S. Fishers Station, the Marine Museum, and the saltwater aquarium, as well as in the natural environment.

Abstract:
All kinds of theories have been forth over the years to explain the appearance of these lights on Brown Mountain near Morganton in Burke County. Even the United States Geological Survey has conducted two investigations. However, at the present time the lights remain as mysterious as ever.

Rev. Humphrey Posey, a Baptist minister known as \"The Great Posey,\" and Rev. William Gannaway Brownlow, a Methodist minister known as \"Parson Brownlow,\" did much in establishing their respective religions in the state's mountain region. Both were circuit riding preachers. Brownlow was later Governor of Tennessee from 1865-1869.
