Maurice and Milton Julian used their ingenuity to pay for their education at the University of North Carolina. The brothers from Winston-Salem made money by renting and selling bicycles. However these were not just ordinary bicycles but geared cycles imported from England.

Whiteville, county seat of Columbus County, is featured in The State's series on North Carolina cities. The city is a large tobacco center. Its substantial growth has enabled it to become the trading center for a large part of the area, and the city is an excellent place to live.
