Abstract:
The Carolina Biological Supply Company of Elon College was started in 1927 by Dr. Thomas Powell, Jr. Powell created this company to provide scientists with easy access to specimens for the classroom, but the company did not become successful until the 1940s. The rapid expansion after the atom bomb and Sputnik spurred tremendous growth in the company and it has since become a large company with different departments, such as tissues, fibers, embryos, worms, insects, larvae, and fish.

Abstract:
Sandy Creek was the first Separate Baptist Church in North Carolina. Founded by Shubal Stearns in 1755, the Separate church found North Carolina favorable because of its lack of religious organizations. The church played an important part during the Regulator movement of 1771. During that time, Governor William Tryon marched through the Sandy Creek area to advance on Alamance and the Regulators.

Abstract:
Topaz, an aluminum fluosilicate that crystallizes in the orthorhombic system and rates as an 8 on the Mohs scale, has been found in North Carolina. The Mineral Resources Division of the N.C. Department of Conservation and Development has noted the most extensive occurrence of Topaz in the state to exist on Bowlings Mountain.
