Good Morning, Miss Dove, a novel by Frances Gray Patton, a Durham, North Carolina native, has been produced into a movie by Cinemascope and Technicolor starring Jennifer Jones. The best-selling novel, which began as a short story printed in Ladies Home Journal, tells the story of a geography teacher trying to make better citizens of her students. The novel has been awarded with the Christopher Literary Award and the Sir Walter Raleigh Award for excellence in fiction by a North Carolina writer. Patton has written a series of short stories, plays, and articles regularly seen in Harper's, Ladies' Home Journal, McCall's, Collier's, and the New Yorker.

In 1955, Tungsten Mining Corporation had a revenue of nearly $10 million, operating a tungsten mine in Vance County - the richest producer in the United States. Apart from tungsten mining, North Carolina's minerals are producing some excitement: North Carolina is a hot spot for copper and lithium, and North Carolina's mining industry is promoting a boom in other industries like ceramics and rubber.

Goerch recounts the life of Robert Hanes, banker, legislator, government official, and business and civic leader, who was born in Salem, September 22, 1890. Hanes joined Wachovia Bank in 1919, after distinguished service in World War I, and built it into a statewide banking powerhouse.
