Abstract:
Asheville native Catherine Hayes caught her Hollywood break after a singing, dancing, modeling career that took off in 1942. At only fourteen, the rising star was contracted to act in films after she turned sixteen. Her career from age eleven to fourteen included pageant appearances and acting courses undertaken in New York.

Abstract:
American serviceman Shepard wrote of his experience while stationed in Germany. He was a military man stationed in Berlin following World War II. His remarks focus on living conditions in the American Zone of Occupation, specifically, German citizens' dismal living conditions following the war including desperate attempts to track down food and clearing of any living plants to burn for warmth.
