Abstract:
Jim Baughman was a native of Washington and a member of Lafayette Escadrille. Two other North Carolinians, Kiffin Rockwell of Asheville and James Roger McConnell of Carthage, also served in this French air squadron during World War I. The Lafayette Escadrille distinguished American pilots who volunteered to served in the French Air Force during World War I. In all, 209 Americans flew and 67 lost their lives, including all three North Carolinians.

Lawrence, who has practiced law for forty years, says \"it was my high privilege to know intimately and to practice before the two most unique jurists in the state--Charles M. Cooke and George Roundtree.\" Roundtree, a native of Kinston, served with distinction on the bench, but it was the practice of law in which he made a record that was outstanding.

Abstract:
Tarboro, county seat of Edgecombe County, has a current population of about 8,000. Its civic leaders are unique in that they work together and are not split into different groups and cliques. The city has about one hundred businesses and a number of highly successful industrial enterprises. This article examines some of them.
