Phillip James Kirk, Jr., has been president and secretary of North Carolina Citizens for Business and Industry (NCCBI) and publisher of NORTH CAROLINA magazine from 1989 to the present. His other activities included being a reporter for the Salisbury Post, school teacher, N.C. State Senator, and Secretary of the North Carolina Department of Human Resources. Kirk is featured in this month's NORTH CAROLINA magazine “executive profile.”

The North Carolina magazine Golf Panel voted the Rock Barn Golf & Spa in Conover the Best New Course for 2003. he course was designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr. Rock Barn takes its name from a natural rock-studded creek that weaves its way through the course.

The NORTH CAROLINA magazine Golf Panel again voted Pinehurst No. 2 the top golf course in North Carolina. Six other courses in the top ten moved up, down, or off the list. Charlotte Country Club, the state's oldest Donald Ross-designed course, edged into the top ten rankings. The article also includes the ranking of the next 90 courses, often called “The Mighty 90.”
