Charlotte-based J.A. Jones Construction Company is one hundred years old. Founded in 1890 by James Addison Jones as a small brick masonry company, J.A. Jones is now a diversified general contractor. The company has built a number of North Carolina's most significant landmarks. In 1909, the firm built the state's first skyscraper, the Independence Building in Charlotte, and in 1988, the company completed the tallest building in the Carolinas, One First Union Center.

Johnie Jones, president and chairman of Charlotte-based Jones Group, Inc., one of the largest construction companies worldwide, is featured in We the People of North Carolina's Businessman In the News section. The company, founded by his grandfather in 1890, is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year.

Murray Whisnant received the 1990 Kamphoefner Prize, administered by the North Carolina Architectural Foundation, which goes annually to a NC architect or architectural firm that has made a sustained contribution of excellence to the Modern Movement. The award is worth $10,000.
