The Raleigh-Durham Airport Authority has not yet completed its road map for the next fifteen years of development, but should their master plan, known as Vision 2040, come to fruition, environmentalists fear its potential outcomes. Residents in opposition to the plan are petitioning to save forested lands, which might be threatened by a proposed runway near Umstead State Park.

Downtown Durham’s new parking plan is to roll out new meters along with a rate increase for all paid parking. The city says its primary goal is not to raise money but to alleviate a parking crunch downtown. By installing metered parking, the city hopes to create more turnover, thus allowing visitors easier access.

The Umstead 100, Raleigh's very own ultramarathon held in April, is a 12.5-mile loop around Umstead State Park that participants repeat eight times. The terrain varies from gravel and dirt paths to a little bit of pavement along hills and trails. It's a race often undertaken by runners making the leap from fifty to one hundred miles, and that leap takes preparation, or at least a different mind-set.

The Triangle biking network needs significant improvement before most people will feel comfortable biking from Chapel Hill to Durham. Urban biking requires some skills and good sense to navigate through traffic. Bikers are advised to maintain their equipment and use a mapping system to find the best routes.

The Falls Whitewater Park Committee is a nonprofit that is trying to get the city of Raleigh to invest in a whitewater park that would be available for kayaking, fishing and tubing. With close access to North Carolina’s river system, kayakers would be trained in a safe environment before paddling in whitewater.

The Duke immersive Virtual Environment, or DiVE, is a cyber-archaeology project funded by the Brazilian government and made for education and research, in collaboration with archaeologists at the University of São Paulo. The goal is for archaeologists to be able to experience a site without going there, and to have the ability to compare side-by-side different stages in an expedition.
