Abstract:
The history of the sweet potato and yam’s influence in Johnston County is explored. Starting in 1985, Smithfield has hosted a Ham and Yam Festival. One of the main events of the festival is a contest that judges how much the potatoes look like people or things. The author grew up in Johnston County and participated in the contest and she describes the place the potato holds as a crop in Johnston County.

Immigration court observers say government prosecutors continue to drop deportation cases in Alamance County. The amount of cases dropped is uncertain, but one estimate is over 24 cases have been dropped since September. The Department of Justice has been investigating the Alamance County Sheriff's office and has reported that the sheriff’s targeted Latino drivers and violated civil rights laws. Some activists believe a lawsuit is soon forthcoming against the department.

Clarence Bender, a Democratic state Senate candidate from Nash County ran for election from a prison cell. Bender was arrested on the first day of early voting for allegedly selling drugs to an undercover police officer. Bender’s history and experience as a local politician is explored. Currently a town commissioner in Castalia, NC, Bender has been described by several as a con-man and by others as a well-respected leader in the community.
