In the 1980s, only 500 people lived in Rolesville, North Carolina, but by 2004, the population had doubled in size. Much of this growth is due to Raleigh’s explosive expansion in the 1990s as well as the establishment of a comprehensive water and sewer system for northeastern Wake County in the 1990s. The system opened northeast Wake County—Rolesville in particular—to residential development, but residents still hold onto their small town’s history.

TS Designs in Burlington is a corporate company that prioritizes social benefits over maximizing profits. Following the passage of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) in 1994, TS Designs lost many customers to overseas producers, which forced the company to cut jobs. Now, the company is coming back strong and focuses on using American-made material for its products.

After North Carolina and other states in the South lifted their laws that limited the alcohol content of craft-brewed beverages, the hard cider industry made a comeback. Two Asheville men, Trevor Baker and Lief Stevens started Nobel Cider in 2012. They use local apples for their hard cider and distribute their product as far east as Charlotte.

In the last decade, scammers have increasingly targeted seniors through a variety of schemes. Many North Carolina seniors have become victims of such crimes and some have lost millions of dollars to sweepstakes scams, investment schemes, and medicare and health insurance fraud, among many others.
