John MConnell was an out of work software salesman in 1982, but by the 1990s had helped get Raleigh-based Medic Computer Systems Inc. off the ground, later making it the largest U.S. seller of software for doctor's offices. After the company was sold in 1997, McConnell founded McConnell Golf LLC, a collection of seven private clubs in North and South Carolina.

Abstract:
From the Virginia border to the South Carolina line Intestate 95 runs 182 miles through eight North Carolina counties. It is an aging highway and needs $4.4 billion in upgrades. It is felt that businesses would lose ten times that amount in future decades. Local business leaders indicate that the most logical way to raise the money is tolls--a proposal that is met with great outcry from the public.

Abstract:
North Carolina is among the more generous states in charitable giving, ranking 10th nationally in percentage of income given--5.9 percent when compared with the national average of 4.7 percent. A 2008 study (the most recent available) conducted by The Chronicle of Philanthropy revealed that the middle class gives a higher income percentage than the upper income class--this holds true for NC also. This article includes a state map by regions, a chart of charitable giving amounts by counties, and an index of the income percentage given in each of the state's 100 counties.
